Original vintage drink advertising travel poster for California Wine Land of America featuring a map with the areas and districts marked on banners and colourful illustrations including vineyards and winemakers, wine barrels and bottles, notable locations and landmarks, people playing music and riding horses, snow topped mountains, trees, a movie film camera, a sailing boat and ships at sea with a crab, fish and seagulls, the title above in bold stylised lettering with a decorative sun compass point above text on the side below and more on a wine press reading - California's vineyard areas, shown in green, stretch for 700 miles from snowy Mount Shasta almost to Mexico, covering from 450,000 acres. In these rich winelands almost every known variety of wine grape finds its ideal habitat, blessed by a sunny climate that permits perfect ripening - hence the saying, Every year is a vintage year in California. There are dry dinner wines from north coastal regions, and sweeter appetizer and dessert wines from warm valleys inland and to the south. However, fine wines of all types, including Champagnes and other sparkling wines, are grown in each of the nine main wine districts shown. / Since 1769, when Father Junipero Serra and the Franciscan padres first planted wine grapes of Mission San Diego California has been noted as a land especially favored for wine growing. The next century saw vineyards spread rapidly, with European winemakers, attracted by the Gold Rush, contributing their age-old art and traditions. Great sailing ships soon carried the pleasure and fame of California wines around Cape Horn to the far ports of the north. Today the Golden State produces over 80 percent of all wines consumed in America, and the wines of California are honored by connoisseurs throughout the world.
