Advertising Poster Locomotive Engineers Steam Railway Firemen. Original antique advertising poster for the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF). The trade union was founded in 1880 and today has over 21,000 members. The poster features a colourful montage of several images; at the centre is a drawing of a train driver in a waistcoat shaking hands with a train conductor in the cab of a train, with the dials of the dashboard behind them, captioned Brothers in Unity for Mutual Help. The image is in a circular border. Below are three trains, one pulling into a busy station. The montage also features drawings of a factory, a steamship, and Stephenson’s Rocket (1825) - an early steam locomotive. Above are five figures in red robes holding various items to represent Hercules, agriculture, Justice, Commerce and Vulcan. In the corners of the poster, images depict George Stephenson (1781-1848, British civil and mechanical engineer dubbed as ‘Father of Railways’), James Watt (1736-1819, Scottish inventor and developer of the Watt steam engine), two doves captioned knowledge and peace, and a beehive surrounded by a wreath, representing industry and reward. Designed and lithographed by Goodall and Suddick, Leeds. Good condition, creasing, tears, paper loss in bottom left corner, staining.
