The historic city of Ripon is located in the Borough of Harrogate in north Yorkshire on the tributaries of the River Ure and the Laver and Skell rivers; founded originally as a monastery in the 660s, the early English gothic style Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Wilfrid was built in 1160-1547 and became a cathedral in 1836.
